So I have been wanting a Small Axe(smaller than a normal axe but larger than a hatchet, the idea being that it can fit on the side of a backpack for camping/SHTF) for a while, and my grandfather always said: don’t buy anything you can make with your own two hands. So I made this. It started out as a beat to shit run of the mill double bit axe with no handle. I cut off the bit that was in worse shape with a hacksaw and cleaned up the rest of the head with a metal file, I had to reshape the blade a little because it looked like someone had been cutting rocks with it. I did not have any access to high quality wood, or atleast I was to lazy to go out of my way to find any, so I went to home depot in hopes of finding a piece of White Oak that would do the job, but of course they failed me, they have a shit selection of wood and the only thing I could find that was not pine or composite board, was a small Red Oak(it’s not as good as White Oak, weaker and more prone to splitting) floor board, so I picked that up and honed it down with a draw knife. Then I bashed the head into place with a mallet and ended up with this. I know it’s not pretty but the whole project only took be a few hours and I used no power tools and I might embellish the handle later by burning some runes into it.
PPK for size reference.
in the first picture you can see the piece that I cut of the head sitting in the back.
